Food Technology, Product Design and Textiles in Key Stage 3 at Beckfoot

At Beckfoot, students will study Product Design, Food Technology and Textiles on rotation throughout Key Stage 3. They can then go on to study Hospitality and Catering or Engineering at GCSE, and Product Design at A Level.

At KS4, students can progress onto further study in the following subjects:

  • Engineering
  • Hospitality and Catering

Enrichment

There are a multitude of enrichment opportunities presented to students in DT, these include:

  • Internal competitions designing dishes for local cafes and festivals
  • Links to products and companies around us discussed in lessons

Assessment

Formative and summative assessment will take place throughout KS3 to monitor student progress, inform further teaching and learning, and address any misconceptions.

Year 7

Product Design – Gadget Stand 

Students will be introduced to the basics of product design and making with an end product of a gadget stand. Students will work with a range of marking our and practical equipment to produce an end outcome. They will learn about design styles, types of wood and environmental issues in product design.

Food – Healthy Breakfast 

Students are introduced to the basics of food technology in view of making a final dish of a breakfast quesadilla, students will work with a range of equipment and oven features as they earn about food miles, nutrition and hygiene.

Textiles – Pencil case 

Students are introduced to the basics of textiles in view of making an end product of a pencil case, students will work with a range of marking out and practical equipment to produce and end outcome, they will learn about different types of fibres and Fairtrade issues.

Year 8

Product Design – Container 

Students are introduced to more advanced product design in view of making an end product of a container, students will work with a range of marking out and practical equipment to produce and end outcomes. Students will learn about logo design, types of plastic and SMSC issues in product design.

Food – Multicultural festival food 

Students will be introduced to more advanced food technology in view of making a final dish of their choosing. Students will work with a range of equipment and oven features as they learn about different food cultures and environmental issues associated with food.

Textiles – Selfie art

Students will be introduced to more advanced textiles through creating a range of samples in view of making an end product of a selfie art inspired cushion. Students will work with a range of marking out and practical equipment to produce an end outcome.

Year 9

Product Design – 3D Jigsaw

Students are encouraged to make independent choices in terms of equipment selection in view of making an end product of a 3D jigsaw, students will work with a range of marking out and practical equipment to mproduce an end outcome, students will learn about electronics, types of metals and product development.

Food – Power of food 

Students will be encouraged to make independent choices in terms of equipment selection in view of making a final dish of their choosing. Students will work with a range of equipment and oven features, while learning about making higher level making skills, students will learn the impact of food on us bot physically and mentally.

Textiles – Typography 

Students are encouraged to make independent choices in term of sample production and equipment selection in view of making an end product of a typographer inspired card holder, students will work with a range of marking out and practical equipment to produce and end outcome. Students will learn about the People Powered Press in Saltaire, surface pattern theory and develop their CAD skills.
