Personal Development at Beckfoot Sixth Form

Volunteering

Throughout Year 12, all of our students take part in the ‘Community Contributor Volunteering Programme’, where they volunteer in an activity of their choice for at least 1 hour a week. Volunteering options can include:

  • Paired reading and student mentoring
  • School library assistant
  • Debate club leaders
  • Supporting teachers in KS3 or KS4 lessons such as PE, Languages, Science and Creativity subjects
  • Leading extracurricular clubs such as Dance Club, Lego Club and Art Club

These experiences can all be used to support students UCAS, apprenticeship and employment applications.

Careers and Futures

Our Careers and Futures programme offers students with bespoke careers advice and experiences, so that they can gain knowledge and skills when applying to their next choices following their Sixth Form journey.

As well as our ‘in-house’ Careers and University Fair, you will have over 60 different careers talks you can attend, delivered by representatives from a multitude of industries. These include teachers, nurses, accountants, actors, IT experts, lawyers and more. You will also be invited to attend two bespoke interview practice sessions with both local and national employers.

The Sixth Form and Careers team will support all Year 12 students to secure a meaningful and relevant work experience placement at the end of Year 12. This is a compulsory requirement for all of our Year 12 students.

Students will also be taken to the Elland Road University and Apprenticeships Fair, and are also supported in attending any University open days and campus visits.

Beckfoot Lecture Programme

Each half term, we welcome two external visitors to give our Sixth Form students lectures on a range of subjects. In the last two years we have welcomed visitors such as Oddballs and CoppaFeel, Locala, Anthony Nolan, Solutions Not Sides and ex Police Officers to discuss the importance of road safety.

We also invite our very own staff members to deliver talks on subjects which are important and of interest to them. Examples have included “My Adoption Story”, “Procrastination is the Theft of Time”, “The Troubles” and the “The Importance of Language”.

This programme is mandatory for our Year 12 students, however Year 13 students are also invited to attend any talks they feel is of interest to them.
